Low Energy Houses

Would you like to have a comfortable home, save energy, save money, reduce pollution and protect the environment?

Timber Structures can help you in achieving your timber construction low energy house.

Low energy houses made out of wood are better for the environment when compared to conventional brick and concrete block houses. The brick and concrete industry is responsible for about 10% of global CO2 emissions into the environment whereas wood helps the environment by absorbing and storing CO2 whilst it grows.

Consultancy Service

Our consultancy service can support you with the planning, development and construction an environmentally friendly low energy house. This can be particularly useful for self-builders who wish to build the home with their own hands. We are very happy to work with clients, architects, engineers to achieve the best low energy house construction possible.

Building Service

Timber Structures can build the outside skin and structure of the clients low energy house and the client can then undertake the interior work themselves. This allows self-builders with the dream of a low energy house made from timber to be helped to achieve their goal more affordably and with the proper technical knowhow.

Cost Saving

The main economic saving with a low energy house comes from the savings made on fuel bills that the house will make going in to the future, of course there is also a corresponding ecological benefit. A further environmental benefit can be achieved during construction through the use of ecologically sound over conventional materials. The ecologically sound building materials and methods are often more expensive than their conventional alternatives although this can be set-off against the cost saving that the building will incur in the future. It is entirely up to the client, whether to use ecological or conventional building materials, however, we can help and advise you every step of the way whichever you decide is right for you.

Low Energy House Building Techniques

The usual build up of the outside wall of a low energy hose is a stick frame that is filled with insulation. On each side of the stick frame there are sheets of OSB (Oriented strand board) nailed on to give high rigidity and strength against wrecking. On the outside there is an extra layer off wood fibre insulation called Pavatex. This Pavatex layer can then be rendered, shingled, skinned with bricks or clad in any number of different materials. The finish of the outside wall will be determined by what is appropriated with regard to the local surroundings and council regulations.

On the inside there is a service void for all the services such as electric cables and water pipes. These voids can also be further insulated to get an even higher insulation value. This void is covered with plasterboard or a panel made with cob which gives a pleasant living climate in the room. Cob is hydroscopic meaning that when there is a high humidity in the air it stores the extra humidity and when there is low humidity it gives the stored humidity back to the air.

Carbon Footprint

To give a rough idea of the scale of benefit to the environment through the use of low energy building techniques over conventional building methods. A 50 square meter wall will have a saving of 4.2 tonnes of CO2 by substituting timber frame and softwood weather boarding for brick and block construction (Warmcel study) . An even more drastic saving of CO2, 13.85 tonnes, would be achieved if the same wall was built from softwood boarding rather than PVCU boarding (JJI study).

Our Advantage

Timber Structures has a great advantage in this field of construction due to our exchange of knowledge with companies and developers in Switzerland, Austria and Germany. These countries are ahead of the UK and are world leaders in the field of low energy housing through decades of designing, investing, engineering, constructing, studying and pioneering work in to low energy housing.
